POSITION SCOPE:

Within the Technical Services group, the Chief Surveyor will assist in all survey projects including, but not limited to: ore control, blast pattern design and surveying, end of month progress, bench grade control, property surveys, materials ordering and has the ability to trouble shoot problems with survey equipment, data collectors, and computer programs related to surveying functions. The Chief Surveyor is responsible for ensuring that the site as-built is updated and accurate, and that the mining process is not delayed (due to staking, surveying of blast holes, ore control, and temporary access). The Chief Surveyor is required to work with little or no supervision in the accomplishment of these tasks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Health, Safety and Environment

  • Follow company and legislated company rules and procedures
  • Contribute to the department’s health, safety and environment goals and objectives
  • Communicate safety concerns to the Chief Engineer and/or take corrective action
  • Ability to work in a variety of climatic conditions associated with the desert

 

Surveying

  • Anticipate potential survey problems and avoid them in a timely manner with a solution

    Proficiency with GPS, total station and conventional survey equipment

  • Maintain the integrity of the site as-built drawings to ensure all mining and construction activity is accurately recorded

 

Engineering

  • Act as alternate for short range planning function

  • D&B planning and design

  • Develop road and dump designs

  • EOM and Planning Production volume calculations

  • Provide site operations with current and accurate maps or drawings

  • Participate in special projects in support of site operation

  • Develop and recommend operating procedures


Cost Control

  • Provide input for annual engineering budget
  • Manage spending within approved budget

 

Human Resource Management and Employee Relations

  • Evaluate staff performance and provide feedback
  • Conduct annual employee performance and wage reviews
  • Train Mine Surveyors in survey methods
  • Train Mine Surveyors in the use of all existing equipment and software

 

Communication

  • Communicate and correct deviations from the mine plan (over digging / dumping, leaving material behind on walls, too high benches, etc.) with mine operations and engineering

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; degree in technology preferred
  • Survey and CAD experience
  • Proficiency with GPS, total station and conventional survey equipment
  • Proficient with mining software (eg. Minesight, Vulcan, Surpac)
  • Basic computer knowledge (AutoCAD, Word, Excel, digital communications)
  • Proficient math skills, including trigonometry
  • Experience in a conventional truck and shovel open pit mine preferred (but not essential)
