Director of Metallurgy – Technical Services

Coeur Mining, one of the world’s leading silver companies and a significant gold producer is seeking a Director of Metallurgy in the Technical Services department to work out of its corporate office in Chicago, IL.

The Director of Metallurgy – Technical Services will be responsible for designing and conducting metallurgical, laboratory and selection of process technology programs project optimization, reporting, and providing decision-making support for key projects and mine expansions.  They will be engaged in providing critical thinking on conducting evaluations of internally and externally owned mining properties through use of metallurgical evaluations or management of external engineering consultants.  In accomplishing these goals, the manager will:

  • Analyze project plant design options and their impact on project production plans. 
  • Evaluate project aspects including: metallurgical process selection, the engineering evaluation, design, and costing of metallurgical process facilities, and supporting infrastructure from construction to closure. The evaluations may include optimization of project aspects from a metallurgical perspective incorporating mine scheduling and material handling aspects. 
  • Oversee project metallurgical testing planning to include sampling plans to ensure representativeness of ore types and their spatial distribution and understand the impacts of project options on the corporate production profile.
  • Provide or coordinate metallurgical support to existing mine sites, when requested by Operations Support.
  • Manage and direct the work of the Metallurgical Group
  • Preparation of the initial processing operating budgets for the project.
  • Work closely with the project analysis group on project economic feasibility reports, and initial operating budgets.
  • Follow and enforce safety standards and policies of the Company.
  • Maintain safe operation through personal example, support of safety programs, ensuring proper working conditions, and development of effective plans and procedures.
  • Provides metallurgical engineering skills for Project Evaluation and M&A Due Diligence Teams, analyzing information, investigating discrepancies and make recommendations to assist decision makers regarding projects and potential acquisitions.
  • Available to travel as needed, both domestically and international.
  • Sound understanding of mine and mill methods, costs, and productivity.

Qualified candidates will be responsible professionals with at least ten years of progressive experience in senior engineering and operations position at a mining operation. 

Technical / Experience Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mineral Engineering, Mineral Processing or related field.
  • A minimum of fifteen years of experience in Technical Services in a processing environment, with several years as a chief metallurgist.
  • Recent experience managing precious metals processing facilities in an operations situation, with silver experience required.
  • Understanding of silver and related base metal processing techniques, including costs and productivities.
  • Relevant underground and open pit mining operations experience required.
  • A Master of Science in related field a plus.

Position may require ability to communicate in Spanish and some travel will be required.
