Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager Human Resources & Health and Safety, the Health & Safety Coordinator will plan, direct and control loss prevention activities which follow corporate and legislated workplace health and safety regulations. The Health & Safety Coordinator will play a key role in the site-wide safety initiatives and programs with particular emphasis on underground mining operations by performing all safety and emergency response functions to support Trevali in achieving zero accidents.

Health & Safety Responsibility

The Health & Safety Coordinator is responsible for creating an environment where Health & Safety is an absolute priority. This shall be achieved by developing safe work practices, positively influencing work safety policies, and acting as leader in the promotion of Health & Safety.

The Health & Safety coordinator is responsible for taking every reasonable precaution to ensure the health and safety of all employees and must consider this responsibility with every business decision.

Job Duties

  • Ensure that Trevali is compliant with all Worksafe NB regulations and programs and maintain a strong working relationship with all inspectors and associated programs
  • Address and oversee Worksafe NB compliance requirements by ensuring regulatory compliance and adhering to work order requests. Manage internal risk management issues by performing risk management assessments with key stakeholders
  • Drive continuous improvement innovations to generate operational improvements in Health & Safety such as annual reviews of internal programs to ensure best practices are followed and exceed industry standards
  • Develop and manage reports on Health & Safety statistics
  • Ensure that the company is adhering to industry standards, legislative requirements and corporate policies
  • Inform and educate employees concerning health and safety standards through formal and informal coaching sessions (ie: safety orientation for all new hires)
  • Actively participate in all safety inspections, investigations, audits and program development
  • Manage emergency response plan by ensuring those identified in the document and trained on their duties, emergency response equipment is in good order, mine rescue team is properly trained and that all plan information is accurate and up to date
  • Assist in creating/conducting health and safety training courses including site specific hazard training
  • Keep consistent and accurate records on safety information
  • Facilitate and participate in Joint Health and Safety Committee Meetings
  • Assist operations team with understanding and interpretation of health & safety regulations and industry best practices
  • Provide emergency first aid

Essential Qualifications

  •  
    • College Diploma in Health and Safety or relevant experience combined with a Health and Safety Certificate
    • 5-10 years of experience in a mining environment with two years' experience working underground as a Health and Safety Coordinator
    • Certificate in Health and Safety from a recognized educational institution (required)
    • Train the Trainer (required)
    • Underground Supervisory Common Core (asset)
    • Specialty Common Core certificate (asset)
    • Basic Common Core certificate (asset)
    • Valid First Aid Certificate
    • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or must be willing to work toward it (asset)
    • Valid driver's license

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Sound knowledge of the New Brunswick Occupational Health and Safety Act, NB Mining Regulations, NB Workers Compensation Act and WHMIS
  • Strong understanding of mining and mineral processes
  • Strong time management, organizing and prioritizing skills
  • Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Knowledge and personal credibility to be able to influence all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work within a diverse workplace
  • Bilingualism considered a strong asset
