Reporting to the safety, environment and asset protection manager, the environmental superintendent is responsible for coordinating the detour lake mine site environmental management systems. the successful candidate will ensure compliance with all environmental regulations and agreements while maintaining respect and protection of the environment consistent with our corporate strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the site environmental team including coaching and developing staff;
  • Maintain compliance with all regulatory, permits, monitoring and reporting requirements;
  • Develop, implement and maintain environmental management systems for all air, surface water, groundwater, geochemistry, tailings, waste and wildlife programs;
  • Monitor the impact of the operation on the natural environment, identify areas of risk and propose adaptive management strategies to mitigate impacts;
  • Promote site awareness of environmental requirements and conditions for operations;
  • Research and propose cost effective, efficient and compliant approaches;
  • Provide support and advice to department heads on inclusion of environmental consideration in work plans;
  • Undertake regular site audits to ensure compliance with policies and procedures;
  • Oversee the site-wide water balance;
  • Ensure incident response measures are in place, lead investigations and prepare reports.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • University degree in an Environmental Engineering, science or environmental discipline;
  • 5-8 years progressive experience in an environmental role within a mining operation;
  • 1-3 years in a supervisory role with demonstrated success mentoring a team of professionals;
  • Extensive knowledge of Canadian and Ontario legislation relevant to the mining industry;
  • Practical experience with acid rock drainage and metal leaching assessment and monitoring
  • Advanced MS Suite skills, experience with SAP considered an asset;
  • Knowledge of environmental management systems;
  • Influential, with strong negotiation skills;
  • Excellent verbal, written and listening skills;
  • Experience in a cross cultural work environment preferred.
