The Lucky Friday Mine is a deep underground silver, lead, and zinc mine located one mile east of the town of Mullan in the Coeur d’Alene Mining District in northern Idaho. The Lucky Friday has been owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, since 1958. Established in 1891 in one of the world’s most prolific silver-producing districts, northern Idaho’s Silver Valley, Hecla Mining Company’s rich history of mining has distinguished it as a respected precious metals producer. Hecla is the oldest U.S.-based precious metals mining company and the largest primary producer of silver in the U.S. Headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, with a sister office in Vancouver, B.C., our international, publicly traded company is 125 years old.

We are currently recruiting for the following position:

Experienced Underground Miner

SUMMARY

The Miner operates equipment to mine silver, lead, and zinc in an underground hard rock mine.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Perform all phases of underground mining activities.
  • Extract ore by drilling and blasting. Set up and operate drills and drilling machines to drill blasting holes. Load explosives, set fuses, and detonate explosives at established blasting times.
  • Operate mining machinery, including slushers, jacklegs, and stopper drills, to shear ore from the working face.
  • Perform development work, including opening up new shafts, drives, air vents, and raises.
  • Perform duties required to ensure safety and to support the mining advance, including scaling loose rock from the walls and roof, drilling and installing rock bolts, extending and installing air and water pipes, ventilation, operating ore loading machinery, constructing timber supports and cribbing, and rehab of existing access.
  • Safely operate equipment underground.
  • Communicate using the squawker, station bells, work bells, pager phone, and leaky feeder radio.
  • Participate in Risk Assessment activities as required.
  • Participate in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) as required.
  • Follow and understand MSHA rules and regulations, environmental rules and regulations, SOP and work area instructions, participates in safety and environmental activities, uses equipment correctly at all times.
  • Comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations. Conducts activities and work in an environmentally responsible manner. Is aware of procedures to minimize impacts to the environment.
  • Maintain a clean work area and is accountable for company and personal tools utilized to perform the work.
  • Complete required paperwork legibly and completely.
  • Must be able to work and communicate with other members of the work team effectively.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures, especially with regard to Safety, Environmental, and Human Resources.

QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Prior experience working in an underground hard rock mine required. Prior experience in conventional mining preferred.
  • Prior experience in narrow vein mining, including back stope and breast down mining preferred.  

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • ATF possessors clearance required.
  • Must complete MSHA 40-hour training or provide 5000-23 documentation of completed training.
  • Must pass physical and drug screen, and essential functions capacity test.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, underground work locations, working from heights, risk of electrical shock, explosives, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position may require work on nights, weekends, and rotating shifts.
