Nyrstar Myra Falls is located in spectacular Strathcona Provincial Park, which is a testament to our environmental commitment – the only North American underground mine operating in a provincial park.  Surrounded by mountains and lakes, the 1.5 hour trip to the mine has some of the world’s most impressive views.  A location like this, both for living and working is rare in the mining industry.

For our Myra Falls mine located nearby Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada, we are currently looking to hire a permanent employee as the:

GENERAL MANAGER

Under the direction of the Senior Vice President Operations of Mining, the General Manager – Myra Falls Mine is responsible for all aspects of the operational direction and performance of the mine, to include oversight and management of the operation, delivery of target production, maximization of gross profit, monitoring of health, safety and environment issues, optimization of production process efficiencies, cost control, quality control, and assurance of regulatory compliance.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

Safety, Health, Environment and Community

·          Promote awareness and comply with site standards and procedures in SHEC.

·          Demonstrate effective performance in achieving agreed SHEC goals in support of the department, site and company standards.

·          Demonstrates leadership in SHEC through personal behaviors and conversations, and ensuring all SHEC incidents are appropriately reported, recorded and analyzed.

·          Provide clear expectations on performance in SHEC through setting objectives in SHEC for all employees and contractors.

·          Take responsibility for the safety of all personnel at Nyrstar Myra Falls. 

People and Organization:

·          Lead by example with supportive behaviors promoting a ‘team’ and cooperative approach, sharing resources, knowledge and ideas with other teams.

·          Provide effective leadership, performance management, career development and succession planning of team personnel.

·          Ensure all operational practices support effective employee relations.

·          Ensure employees are trained and held accountable for roles.

·          Align all operational objectives to the Business Plan and Nyrstar Values and Behaviors.

·          Promote and manage effective leadership, performance management, career development and succession planning of team personnel.

·          Consistently apply workplace management procedures to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, agreed values and behaviors and Nyrstar Code of Conduct.

·          Appropriately prioritizing activity to continuously achieve targets.

·          Establish processes/systems to align with the Business Plan and assist in exceeding expectations. 

Operations

·          Ensure the Myra Falls Operation consistently demonstrates Nyrstar’s values and behaviors and meets/exceeds Nyrstar’s vision, and goals.

·          Demonstrate expertise in a variety of mining concepts, practices, and procedures.

·          Plan and direct others in strategies that result in increased revenues and a high rate of return on investments.

·          Driving the evaluation of current and proposed systems and procedures.

·          Recommend change when necessary and assist the implementation of new processes.

·          Ensure all projects are effectively budgeted and monitored to within cost constraints.

·          Monitoring and control of Exploration Programs.

·          Liaising with local and federal governments, as well as local communities, unions, etc. 

COMPETENCIES

·         Demonstrated commitment to a zero harm safety culture through modelling safety behaviors and implementing safety improvement initiatives.

·         Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mining Engineering, preferably with specialization in Underground Mining and Mine Planning, and with a professional designation/ mine managers certification.

·         20 years’ experience in the mining industry, specifically in underground mining.

·         10+ years’ experience in senior leadership positions in both operational and technical functions, of which at least 5 years must be as the General Manager of an operating mine.

·         Demonstrated experience in senior level operational, technical, and corporate project roles with one of the major international mining houses, as well as significant international experience, having lived and worked outside Canada in recent years.

·         Must bring experience in base metals, preferably zinc, copper and lead.

·         Proven experience leading change management initiatives, in particular cultural change programs, as well as restructuring operations.

·         Demonstrated experience in the development and management of major technical projects to include underground automation.

·         Experience in continuous improvement, business optimization, and innovation strategies.

·         Proven track record in working to budgets and capital cost expectations.

·         Demonstrated project management experience.

·         Experience in mergers and acquisitions is preferred.

Compensation

Compensation and Benefits:

· Base Annual Salary: between CAD $ 240,000 to CAD $ 280,000.

· Annual Vacation: 20 days.

· Housing support: an appropriate housing allowance.

· Transport: fully maintained motor vehicle provided.
